State of the Economy

Our economy is on a small-ish roller-coaster, but what is often ignored is that the roller-coaster has long been operating far above ground-level in Australia. We have an enviable economic status worldwide. It is close to three full decades since Australia last entered a recession. The GFC hit with full force in September of 2008 – 11 years ago!

Australian annual economic growth has slowed in recent years, bringing to some a sense of gloom and even unfamiliarity. There are now many who have never experienced a significant economic downturn in Australia through their whole careers – whether as an employee, a business owner, a politician, or an organisational leader.

There is (to my mind, needlessly alarmist) talk of upcoming recession for Australia. National retail figures for July indicate a downward spend Australia-wide. However, there are indications from some of my sources that retail spending has increased through August and into September. It may be that as the general population receive a bonus in their tax returns it may provide a micro-stimulus to spending. There are, of course, numerous other factors impacting our overall economy. It is the cross-impact of different factors that is, however, creating the analytical uncertainty and negative interpretations of trends.

In the face of economic uncertainty, however, what can be our local response?

How To Achieve Real Success

Last week I had the privilege of being the M.C. for an event held in Perth – Home-Grown Heroes at the Crown – dedicated to real estate professionals and run by the team at Real Estate Brilliance. Congratulations to the brilliant Ryan Thompson and his team on an outstanding event.

Featuring presentations by some of the most highly successful real estate agents in both Western Australia and Australia, there were numerous tales told of how they achieved success DESPITE some of the toughest market conditions they had ever seen.

For example, Rick Hockey, one of WA’s top real estate performers, works in the Port Hedland area where real estate values dropped overnight from $750,000 per house to $250,000. How do you create success in those kinds of conditions?

Metronet Announcement

This past weekend Premier Mark McGowan announced the plans for the Ellenbrook Metronet Line. The overall route and planned stations have been finalised and the next steps are being undertaken in the planning process.

We are hoping to have a local event to go through the planning in detail and to give local business and community leaders the opportunity to discuss the Metronet, commercial aspects and related issues directly with the responsible Ministers. There will be more on this if we are able to arrange the availability of guest speakers.

Please see the following offical Metronet information for more details regarding the Ellenbrook line.

To The Moon and Back Again

July 20, 2019 (at 10:56 pm US EST) marks the 50th anniversary of the first footsteps of man on the moon. In Perth it was 10:56 am on July 21 when Neil Armstrong stepped on to the surface of the moon.

How is it that 50 years ago, people with just a bunch of brains, slide rules and computers filling whole floors with less computational power than a wristband fit-bit were able to hurl themselves into the void and softly land on a small alien world?

And if they could do it then, why is it so hard for people to get things done now?

Ellenbrook’s First Business Expo

July 4 saw Ellenbrook’s First Business Expo.

Almost 30 exhibitors representing a broad range of industries and services created an electric aura at Ellenbrook House and Art Gallery.

Despite a dumping from the second top rainstorm of the year, there was great activity throughout the day, with special guests of the Mayor Cr. David Lucas and The Hon. Jessica Shaw, MLA.

Our thanks to the many exhibitors and visitors for a fantastic day.

Keep reading and see photos.
